Good news for Austria as an innovation hub: in 2025, significantly more inventions and trademarks were filed with the Austrian Patent Office than in the previous year. Our 2025 annual report shows a clear upward trend. It is now available at 2025.patentamt.at.
More inventions, more trademarks
A total of 2 272 invention applications (patents and utility models) were filed – an increase of 4.4%. Trademark growth was even stronger: with 5 022 applications, the 5 000 mark was exceeded for the first time since 2021, representing a 13% increase.
Innovation across Austria
Upper Austria was again the most inventive federal province (496 inventions), followed by Styria and Vienna. Vorarlberg once again leads in per-capita terms. Among companies, AVL List tops the ranking for the third consecutive year, followed by Julius Blum and Siemens Mobility Austria.
Research institutions are also strongly represented: TU Wien placed among the top five individual applicants, and AIT (Austrian Institute of Technology) is the most active non-university research institution in the country.
International trademarks on the rise
Austrian trademark filings have grown strongly – both nationally and internationally: in addition to the 5 022 applications filed with the Austrian Patent Office, a further 4 095 EU trademarks were submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) – an increase of 15.5%, placing Austria seventh among all EU member states.
Services in higher demand than ever
Alongside rising filing numbers, we are particularly pleased by the growing demand for our services: for the first time, more than 1 000 invention-related services were used within a single year. The range spans from accessible advisory formats such as the IP Buddy for school and university students, to research services like the Invention Check, to offerings tailored for SMEs such as the Patent Voucher.
Trademark services are also gaining momentum: 738 requests for Pre-Check Trademark and trademark similarity searches represent another new record.
