Digital Object Identifier (DOI)

A new service specifically for universities and research institutions

Innovations deserve to be seen, found, and cited. Our Office is now offering a new service for assigning DOIs (Digital Object Identifier) to patent applications and patent specifications.

While patent publication numbers already serve as legal identifiers, the DOI provides your patent with a modern, digital reference that can be used across systems. This makes your patent part of the international digital knowledge infrastructure.

What is a DOI?

A DOI is a unique and permanent identifier for digital resources. It features:

  • the unambiguous citation of a resource
  • long-term discoverability via web searches and databases
  • linking to important metadata (e.g., title, author, year of publication)

The DOI links to a landing page where all relevant information regarding the patent application or patent specification is provided.

What are the advantages of a DOI?

  • Patent applications and patent specifications become citable in accordance with scientific standards
  • Research results are permanently traceable
  • Visibility within the scientific community is improved

How much does a DOI cost?

DOIs are assigned free of charge.

Who can use the service?

A DOI is assigned exclusively to published patent applications and patent specifications. Patent applicants and patent holders are eligible to request a DOI.

How do I request a DOI?

Simply make a request via email to bibliothek[at]patentamt.at. We will then send you the request form.
