A word mark consists exclusively consist exclusively of letters of the Latin alphabet, numbers, and permissible special characters, without color, specific typeface, arrangement, or figurative elements.

If it contains additional graphic features, such as colors, special fonts, or a specific arrangement of the individual elements, it is to be regarded as a word-and-design mark.

Section 23(1)(1) of the Patent Office Regulation (PAV) stipulates that the following signs are considered “permissible signs”:
